Mit den kalten Temperaturen vor der Tür gehört der Raclette-Ofen bei vielen Schweizer Familien wieder auf den Tisch. Doch was viele nicht wissen: Der Käse-Plausch für die Menschen kann für Wellensittiche fatale Folgen haben. «Wenn der Raum schlecht belüftet ist, sind die Vögel innert Minuten tot», sagt Tierarzt Piero Godenzi aus Schaffhausen. Er habe auch in seiner Praxis schon solche Fälle gesehen.
Schuld sind die Dämpfe, die von den erhitzten teflonbeschichteten Raclette-Öfen freigesetzt werden: «Die Antihaftbeschichtung zersetzt sich bei Hitze, das sogenannte Polytetrafluorethylen ist für alle Vögel giftig.» Todesfälle bei Wellensittichen seien aber am bekanntesten, weil diese am meisten in den Häusern gehalten würden.» Grund für die besondere Empfindlichkeit ist das Atemsystem der Vögel. «Die Oberfläche der Atemwege ist grösser als bei anderen Tieren. Da der Vogel selbst aber kleiner ist, verträgt er weniger dieser Giftstoffe.» Dazu komme, dass Vögel zusätzlich zur Lunge noch Luftsäcke hätten, die Luft werde also zweimal durch die Atemwege geschleust.
Blutungen in der Lunge
Auch Jean-Michel Hatt, Direktor der Klinik für Zoo-, Heim- und Wildtiere am Tierspital Zürich, warnt: «Die freigesetzten Dämpfe lösen bei Vögeln Blutungen in der Lunge aus, an denen sie sterben können.»
Godenzi macht deshalb seine Kunden immer darauf aufmerksam, die Vögel nicht in der Küche oder im Wohnzimmer zu halten. «Die haben dort nichts zu suchen, sondern gehören in ein separates Zimmer.» Das sagt auch Christine Künzli, stellvertretende Geschäftsleiterin bei der Stiftung Tier im Recht: «Wellensittiche und auch andere Vögel sollten nicht in Räumen gehalten werden, wo sie diesen Dämpfen ungeschützt ausgesetzt sind.» Der Besitzer verletze damit seine Pflichten gegenüber dem Tier.
Hatt sagt, es gebe bereits Teflon-Pfannen mit Warnhinweisen. «Da steht, man solle sie nicht in der Nähe von Vögeln benützen.» Für andere Haustiere wie Hunde oder Katzen, aber auch für den Menschen selbst seien die Dämpfe hingegen ungefährlich. «Das liegt am Aufbau des Atemsystems.»
